Death, Doom and Detention

Death, Doom and Detention (Darklight, #2)

Upon finishing this book I was like

I have not screamed out loud at book like this since reading Jennifer Armentrount’s Opal in December, there was cursing involved! I wouldn’t say DD&D leave you with a cliff hanger, but it kinda leaves you feeling like

simply because you have to wait to find out what happens next!

DD&D leaves off right where DATGND stops.  Lorelei, Jared, Cameron, Brook and Glitch; or as I like the call them, the Scooby gang. They remind me really of a young Buffy the Vampire slayer, only sans vampire, but still very heavy on the supernatural aspect, and really who didn’t love Buffy?

image

This book had sooo much more action in it than the first and sooo much going on, I couldn’t put it down, as was apparent when I finished it in one day.  Again trying to make it non spoiler-y even though all I want to do is gush over it!

Cameron and Jared have formed a semi- truce because they have a common goal; And Lorelei is still Lorelei, that is until people at school start acting stepford wife weird, with added aggression and out of character behavior and Jared disappears then comes back the same way. This puts him and Cameron on opposite side again and more questions than answers for Lorelei, because if someone can take down Jared; her biggest defense, then she is doomed.  With her life being threatened left and right (literally) the last thing she needs is to get detention. And a new ability?

There were some sad moments in the this book but for me they heartbreaking for the non-traditional reasons. This book still had some famous lines that are signature for Darynda.

“You’re a copy of a copy of a copy; I’m the real deal Bitch.”

And the one that actually made me laugh out loud,

“How-? What did you–? What did you–? I don’t—“I stopped, assessed the situation, then looked back up at him. “I think I peed my pants.”

Needless to say is it October yet?!

Death and the Girl Next Door

Published March 21, 2013 by bookbesties

Death and the Girl Next Door (Darklight, #1)

Where to start, everyone knows I’m already a HUGE fan of Dayrnda Jones because of my girl crush Charley Davidson, is it possible to be more of a fan? After reading Death and the girl next door I say YES!

image

I’m going to try and put this as non-spoilery as possible, which is hard with this one, but here goes.

Death and the girl next door is about a girl named Lorelei (which since the Gilmore Girls has been my favorite name ever!), who has random visions and suddenly is being stalked by the town loner and the hot guy(cause there is always a hot guy) who just moved to town.

Said loner (Cameron) and said hot guy (Jared) have one thing in common, Lorelei and they can’t stand each other, which is strange to Lorelei since they just met. Or have they? Essentially the book is about A Reaper/Angle of Death, a Nephilim (half angle half human) and a Prophet (can’t say which ones) who all come together for the greater good (so to speak).  Add in a ghost, some Demons, witty banter and a hot guy in a shower scene and BOOM: Awesomesauce book.

The banter that Jared and Cameron share is one thing but the banter between Lorelei and her two best friends are what make the book. It’s what I wish me and my high school friends talked about!

The thing I love about Darynda’s books are that there is always something to keep a reader interested,(this reader anyway) and the side stories/mysteries she adds in are like a story within a story.

I started this book with the sample, and then within the first few pages bought the book, then halfway through, bought the second book! That’s how much I loved it. There is some unrequited love going on, after all this is a YA book, but its not–girl- pines-for-boy, boy-has-no-idea-type-thing, there was just enough to keep you wondering how it was going to end. The best part was of course the ending, I was all

image

and that lead into the second book, Death Doom and Detention, which I am currently reading now!

4 out of 5 stars!

Never judge a book by it’s movie.

Published March 17, 2013 by bookbesties

It’s been done in the past, but now it seems as though it’s a current ‘thing’ to make more and more books into movies. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, I get to see my favorite characters on the big screen, but as you know the book-to-movie adaptation is usually different. But, I still have compiled a list of books being made into movies so you can either add them to your TBR pile, like I have, or just keep an eye out for the movie. some I have read, most, sadly, I have not….yet. So here they are in no particular order.

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)

When her mom is attacked and taken from their home in New York City by a demon, a seemingly ordinary teenage girl, Clary Fray, finds out truths about her past and bloodline on her quest to get her back, that changes her entire life. 2013 release.

The Host (The Host, #1)

When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.

This book is on my TBR pile, I have had it since it came out and it failed to pull  me in in the first chapter, but I may read it before the movie comes out, just to see. 2013 release.

Divergent (Divergent, #1)

Set in a futuristic dystopia, a teenager seeks to break free from her homogeneous society that divides people based on human traits. She leaves her faction and joins a rival group, where she falls for a young man.

This book is in the top three of my TBR pile, I have heard nothing but great things about this book and series and can’t wait to read it! 2014 release

Thirteen Reasons Why

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers thirteen cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

This book is in my top ten TBR pile as well. No release date on this movie as of yet.

Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1)

Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand, Travis Maddox.

This was my first NA(New Adult) book that I read and LOVED it!! The story of Travis and Abby is the classic friends turned into lovers but with soooo much more than that. Travis is one of my book boyfriends for sure! It’s not a 50 shade of grey so if you didn’t like that, you will like this. I did. No release date on this movie.

Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1)

We all know what this book is about, I mean who has’t read it? But for the sake of those who haven’t, When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Christian Grey is by far my most top ten book boyfriend(seriously you can’t have just one BB) and I LOVED this book right from beginning to end, and rushed to get the other two in the series. It is sooo rated a NC-17 book, so be warned now, there is a lot of sex in it, but I loved the book for the message behind the sex. Christian has a dark past, will love help him overcome it? No release date for this as of yet.

Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1)

Romance was not part of Nora Grey’s plan. She’s never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.

AHH, Patch! Again in the top ten of my book boyfriends.  You can tell from the cover that this book is about a fallen angel(those are ALL the rage right now) but Patch is no ordinary fallen angel, he has secrets and is dangerous  very dangerous  and wants Nora Grey, but not for love.  This is one of my highly anticipated book-to-movie movies I literally am dying for! No release date for this yet.

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story.

In the TBR file, I know this book has been out since 2007, but with more that 143 thousand ratings on good reads and 8 thousand 4-5 star ratings, i still have yet to read it, but its in my top ten. Release date in 2013, but subject to change.

Wake (Dream Catcher, #1)

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people’s dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie’s seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.
She can’t tell anybody about what she does they’d never believe her, or worse, they’d think she’s a freak. Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else’s twisted psyche. She is a participant.

This book looks really good, it’s in my pile as well and has the potential to turn into a really good movie. No release date for this move.

There are many, many more, but these are ones that I am really excited to see on the big screen. So what are you waiting for? go out and read the books before the movies!! Never judge a book by its movie.

Charley Davidson..My first book Girlfriend!

Published March 7, 2013 by bookbesties

Charley Davidson is a cross between The Ghost Whisperer and Veronica Mars (I know Veronica Mars) and I so want to be her when I grow up!

image

I did a review earlier on First Grave on the Right and it was like chips, you can’t just have one! I finished the rest of the books (out so far) in about 4 days (I’m a fast reader) and cried like a baby because the fifth book isn’t out yet! WHY!!!!

Charley Davidson is a Grimm Riper without the black robe and Scythe, more like great boobs (Danger and Will Robinson) and killer shoes, with ADD and attitude to match!

“With Great boobs comes great responsibility.”

I decided instead of doing each book I’d just combine them because really you’re not going to start the series in the middle (duh).

****Spoiler*****

Second Grave on the Left (C...Second Grave on the Left:  This picks up where the first one left off, Charley figured who the Reyes is or WHAT he is and is dealing with that nugget, when she is pulled out of bed by her best friend/ receptionist Cookie about her missing friend.  After going to a coffee shop and finding the friend not there as well as encountering a departed soul in Cookie’s trunk Charley is hired by Mimi’s (the missing friend) husband to find his wife. Charley not only has to find the missing women, but also unravel the mystery behind dead trunk guy (her words not mine), then there is Reyes. Reyes Farrow is the convicted felon serving a life sentence because he was accused of killing his father, Earl Walker. Reyes is able to leave his body (because he is the son of Satan) and come to Charley in incorporeal (ghostlike) form to save her life, talk to her and make her hot, literally. He has walked out of the facility he was in after waking up from a coma and is being tortured by daemons and has decided to let his human body die, only Charley is not having that and in a move that she pulled out of her ass did something that was like WHOA! You don’t want to piss off the son of Satan let me tell you!

Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson #3)Third Grave Dead Ahead: After pissing off the son of Satan, (like really bad) Reyes, Charley is being haunted by him in her dreams. I’m not talking boo! Type haunting, I’m talking every time she closes her eyes he is there giving her the most UH-MAZING orgasms known to man! (Why complain right?!) The only problem is that she isn’t getting any sleep, so she survives on coffee non-stop while working on her latest cases (she always has more than one) a missing wife, again and who poisoned a dog of a local biker gang. Charley has not slept in 13 days and is still able to provide the top notch hilarity that she is known for.

“Give it up? Not likely. Besides what else would I do? I totally should have gone to Hogwarts when I had the chance.”

She also has to deal with the fact that Reyes (the HOT son of Satan) has escaped prison and dropped the bomb on her that the man he went to prison for killing, Earl Walker, is indeed very much alive. Not only did this man do unmentionable things to Reyes when he was a kid (including kidnap him from his birth parents) but he is also insane and Reyes has set out to find him, with the help of Charley.  She also learns some things about herself in the process and by the end of this book my mouth was on the floor by what happened! (Can’t tell you, read the book)

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson, #4)Fourth Grave beneath My Feet: Charley is broken, or depressed whichever way you want to look at it. And with good reason! With the revelation of what Reyes did to her and the Earl Walker thing, along with her dad riding the crazy train she has had it with life and has vegged out in front of her T.V. for the past two month. Reyes has been released from prison after having been cleared of all charges of murder and because of what he did, Charley want’s nothing to do with him, yet she keeps seeking him out! This type of romance kills me! I love the I want him, I don’t want him thing.  Daemons are attacking her full out now and because she is the portal to haven that Satan wants Reyes (the son of Satan who fell in love with her) will stop at nothing until she is safe. But Charley while on her latest cases gets conflicting information about Reyes and that he may not be who he claims to be.  She has this overwhelming fear because of the Earl Walker thing (again, can’t tell you, read the book) where she was not afraid before and that fear is what leads the daemons right on her doorstep. This book was intense because of the relationship or lack thereof she has with Reyes, we all know they are in love with each other but neither will flat out say it and there are consequences for falling in love with the son of Satan. (Naturally)

Still choked full of laughter I found myself laughing even HARDER at this book.

“I parked in front of a NO PARKING sign. Since it didn’t specify to whom it was referring, I figured it couldn’t possibly be talking to me.”

I love Darynda Jones!! I am SOOOO excited for the fifth installment to come out; it’s like Nutella on toast to me at this point! If I didn’t have a n E-reader this would be one of the books I would camp out over night for at the local 24 hour book store. (They should totally have those)

Because this post has gone on long enough of my LOVE for all things Charley Davidson do yourself a favor and get the books, like now. you will not be disappointed, and if you are then too bad!

First Grave on the Right, Where have you been all my life?!

First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

By: Darynda Jones

OK, OK I know.. I Missed the bus on this when it came out, In fact it too was at my very large TBR pile and I figured I would get to it sometime… man what the heck took me so long first off?!

From the moment I opened the book I knew I would love it instantly and I did.

“This whole grim reaper thing should have come with a manual. Or a diagram of some kind.  A flow chart would have been nice.”

Yes, this book is about a Grim Reaper, a female grim reaper / PI/ smart-ass extraordinaire, who named her boobs “Danger” and “Will Robinson”. I could not stop laughing out loud at this book, literally.

From the things coming out of her mouth to the witty phrases at the begining of each chapter

“I may not look like much, but I’m an expert at pretending to be a ninja. -Bumper sticker”

Charley Davidson is a grim reaper, the grim reaper without the whole black robe thing. She helps departed souls say goodbye to loved ones and in most cases help them find out who murdered them. This is where we find Charley at the opening of the book, three Lawyers have been killed on the same night and they all worked for the same firm, coincidence? Charley doesn’t think so and with he help of her Uncle Bob, a Skip tracer (think Avery from Grey’s Anatomy) and her best friend/secretary Cookie, Charley brings in the bad guy. She does all of this while being visited by a mysteriously beautiful man that ..umm.. gives her THE BEST DREAMS EVER. But when she starts remembering things about the dream man and then find out that he is not so much a dream but very real, Charley becomes obsessed with finding out who he is. And when she dose it’s a perfect way to Segway into the second installment of the book which I am downloading to my Kindle as I type.

I loved this book from beginning to end, it had just the right amount of paranormal without reaching and just the right amount of mystery and some romance sprinkled in. And who wouldn’t love that cover?  The shoe alone…. Anyways,

5 out of 5 stars!

Never Too Far

Never Too Far - Abbi Glines

By: Abbi Glines

I was SUPER excited for this book to be released so I could finish the Rush and Blair story.

image

Within the first few pages I was shocked. Usually I’m used to reading books that have the “whhhhaaat” moment in the middle or the end if its a two-parter but this had me like

what? Alison Brie

But in a good way.

Continuing from Fallen Too Far it’s been three weeks and we find Blair having to come back to Rosemary after having her world shattered by the one person she trusted the most. She now has a secret that is threatening to shatter her world and the man she left behind. Rush is a shell of a person without Blair in it and once she comes back he is hell bent on making her stay, with him; and will do whatever it takes. I found myself waiting for the other shoe to drop while reading it, I was thinking it can’t be that easy.. she comes back and assumes her old job and even has a place to live right off the bat. Since the shocker from the first few pages carried throughout the book and I was 80% done I thought nothing major was going to happen and they would ride off into the book sunset. (silly me)

I found myself shouting at the the book (RUSH to be exact) when said event did happen and was  all

image

He can’ be this stupid ..BUT the book did have a HEA (happy ever after) sort of. In places it felt kinda rushed and I would have liked there to be a epilogue to show what happens a few years or even months down the line just to see how it all tuned out, but I think we as the readers can fill in the blanks. 4 out of 5 stars.
