Taming Cross by Ella James

Published September 10, 2013 by bookbesties

Taming Cross (Love Inc., #2)

For twenty-three years, Cross Carlson was a playboy. You know the type. Tall, dark, and wealthy. Blue-eyed. Charming. He seemed to have it all so easy. But Cross was harboring a terrible secret – one that helped ruin the life of an innocent girl and almost ended his own.
Finally out of the hospital, Cross is flailing, scarred in both body and mind and stifled by the weight of the secret he still keeps. The only way to absolution lies in a Mexican convent, and going there could cost him everything.
If there’s anyone who knows what it’s like to screw up big time, it’s Meredith Kinsey. Just a few years ago, Merri was an ordinary girl with a job at her college newspaper and white picket fence kind of dreams. Now she’s holed up in a Mexican convent, hiding from a drug lord who thinks he owns her.
What happens when the only way out of hell is with the son of the man who put you there? They say love conquers all, but does it really?

First off, with a cover like this who wouldn’t want to know what’s inside this book. I mean look at it!

I was really excited to read this book because it was the 2nd in the Love Inc. books and it was about new characters and old ones, and having loved the first book Selling Scarlett which you can read my review here, and  I was sure I was going to love this one as well.  I was right. Taming Cross was so not what I expected, I can’t tell you what I was expecting but it wasn’t it. And it’s not a bad thing, I think the thing I like most about Ella James books this one included, is that they are sexy, you know  a stolen smile here, a touch there, holding hands and  maybe some stolen moments throughout to really make your feel the tension between the two MC’s.

Don’t confuse SEX with sexy, there is a difference. While there is sex in this book it’s  not overtly and not it’s driving force.  The movies are not right, you actually DON’T have time for all  that when you are running for your life, which is what they are doing.

I loved the fact that Cross Carlson the main MC is not your average hero, hell he’s not even a hero by any means but his moral compass makes him one, and he sets out on this suicide mission but I must have missed the memo where he was a secret bad ass, the things he did just blew my mind.  The action in this book was amazing to read, Ella is a very detailed writer so I have no problem picturing exactly what she lays out in a scene, I felt like I was watching SOA.

Ella did a great job in leaving just enough questions and mystery to travel into the next book which is about Mr. Love Inc. himself and I can’t wait,  I love following these group of people who did not start out as friends but are all tied together .

Real Blog tour- Interview with Katy Evans

Published September 7, 2013 by bookbesties

Unless you have been living under a rock you should have already caught the fever that is Remy! And if you have been following my twitter or FaceBook feed then you should also know how obsessed I am with all things Katy Evans and Remy. Well imagine my delight when I got the honor of interviewing Katy for the Real Re-release which are in your local Targets everywhere so go now! Need more motivation?

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00071]

Remington Tate has a bad-boy rep in and out of the ring, a granite-hard body, and a raw, animal power that sends his female fans into a frenzy. But from the moment their eyes lock, the only woman he wants is Brooke Dumas. His desire is pure, all-consuming, and REAL.
Hired to keep his perfect body working like a machine, Brooke finally has the lucrative sports therapy job she’s been dreaming of. But as she tours the dangerous underground fighting circuit with Remy and his team, Brooke’s own body becomes alive with the most primal of hungers. If what happens between Brooke and Remy is ever as light as a flirtation, it quickly becomes an erotic obsession for them both, and promises so much more.
But their white-hot lust has a dark side–and when Remy’s deepest secret comes to light and Brooke’s familial duties demand action, will the pair be able to hang on, or will everything that once seemed so real suddenly fade away like an illusion?

You can also check out my first ever 6 star review here, and trust me I don’t hand out 6 stars all willy- nilly.

Author Interview

Thank you so much for allowing me to do this, you know I am slightly in awe of you!

Thanks so much for having me over, it’s a pleasure to be here.

The choice of music in the book is phenomenal, I always liked what I like to call Remy’s theme song Iris but after REAL, I LOVED it. What came first for the idea of the book, the song or the story?

First came the story. More exactly first came the characters. Remy was so strong he overpowered everyone even when he’s reserved and quiet. But the story came because of what he wanted, which the title is based on, and as I wrote the story and got to know him and Brooke, Iris happened. I felt just like you, I have always admired Goo Goo Dolls and loved that song, but Remy gave it a whole new meaning for me.

What scene was your favorite to write?

The reveal scene is my favorite. Where you tie everything together, know what’s been going on, finally “get” the title, I just love that scene. No more pretenses, no more walls up, just bare raw need and truth, right there between them.

I’m so excited for you with all the success Real has had and congrats! How are you handling the fame/success?

Thank you so much! It’s truly been unreal and amazing, but to be honest, I don’t think I’ve stopped even for a moment to bask in any of it since I am so eager to keep telling their story and sharing it with you. I’m just so glad and grateful to everyone who has read Real and has opened their hearts to it like you did.

Inside the mind of Katy Evans

Last song sung out loud to?(I’m talking at the top of your lungs out loud)

Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side”

Are you more of a Remy playlist kinda girl or Brook’s?

I’m more into the kind of songs Brooke listens but I’ve gotten quite attached to so many of Remy’s songs.

Three things in your purse/ pocket right now?

Cell phone, wallet, and keys

What song best describe how you are feeling right now?

I was just listening to Katy Perry’s ROAR and I have to admit that song makes me feel pretty feisty.

I love that song too!  What actor/actress would you choose to be voice the audiobook?

There’s an audiobook releasing as we speak and I can’t wait to hear the REAL voice used! 🙂

Did you own a walk man, and if so what was the color?

Pink walk man. I so loved my walk man! 🙂

Didn’t we all!  Thank you so much Katy as always it was a pleasure and I can’t wait to meet you again!

Thank you so much, Vonetta. It truly is my pleasure to be here and I can’t wait to meet you too!

Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken

Published September 6, 2013 by bookbesties

Ruin

I’m not your typical girl. I’ve been running away from the memories that haunt me for so long that depression has become my only comfort. I was content in the darkness…until Wes Michals offered to be my light. I didn’t know that time wasn’t my ally — that every second that ticked past was one step closer to the end of something that was beginning to mean the end of myself. He tried to warn me. He promised me all he was able to offer–each moment as it came–but it would never be enough.

” His eyes held my ruin.”  “His kisses didn’t give- they ruined.”

There are a few books that grab you by the heart and squeeze until it hurts from the very first chapter. I am a sucker for a good book, ones that make me think about loss, and love and faith and when I can find all that in one book I open my big ass mouth and tell the world (the world meaning anyone who reads this blog).

Ruin is about all those things above and more. I had no idea who Rachel Van Dyken  was nor had read anything by her, but I kept hearing that Ruin tore people’s hearts out,  so naturally it moved to the top of my TBR pile (because who doesn’t want thier heart torn out by a book?)

Kiersten is just starting her freshman year after her parents died, she is depressed and runs into quite literally Weston, and from there her life will never be the same.  Weston was just moving through life counting down his minutes until they were up, it was only when meeting Kiersten that he wanted more time.

I loved the supporting characters Gabe and Lisa. Everything that came out of Lisa’s mouth made me fall off my chair laughing, making the book have a nice balance between the heavy and the lite.

“He’s talking football,  shh, it’s like a watching a baby turtle trying to find the ocean.”

The book is told in dual POV’s and while normally I don’t think it works for all stories it did for this, because there were certain scenes that I was dying to know how the other person felt and Rachel accomplished that without being repetitive.

Weston ‘Wes’ Michals was hot and smart and I loved when he got deep and insightful

“It’s human nature to assume that we have that sort of control over what happens to us, but the truth is… Life happens and sometimes you’re too late. Hell, sometimes you’re too early. Sometime you make the wrong choice just like sometimes you make the right one. The only time people ever use those three is when things don’t go the right way. People don’t question themselves when things are going well. They question when things have go to hell.”

By the time I was finished this book (at one o’clock in the morning) my throat hurt so much form trying (and failing many times) to hold back the tears I thought OK, i’m done

But when I got to the dedication which rightfully was placed at the end, I lost it. I needed to calm myself and have a moment.

This book was more gut wrenching than other books on this topic because of the way it was written. RVD mixed the perfect amount of love, grief, and faith balancing it all out evenly. I loved loved loved it, I would recommend this to my 16 year old cousin as well as my 86 year old grandmother! I will defiantly be reading more of Rachel Vane Dyken books.  Now if you’ll excuse me

Relic by Renee Collins

Published August 30, 2013 by bookbesties

Relic

So by reading the synopses of this book I was gun-hoe to get into. I love a good YA fantasy and the idea of Relic’s was fascinating to me.  What I did like about this book was that it had enough mystery and action to keep the story moving along and the MC was on a level, likable.  Renee Collins did an excellent job of painting the western  times and putting a twist on it by mixing it with her world.

What I didn’t like about this book was that It was a western, and while the synopsis told me that,I still didn’t think western western. I really don’t like to read ‘period’ or historical books, but I thought this would be different, some period books are written so that you kind of forget save for a few references here and there, but when i started reading words like ‘viddles’ I felt like I was thrown into an episode of Dr.Quinn Medicine Women

I also felt like I wasn’t given enough explanation at some points and without giving spoilers away, there were parts where I had to re-read it because I didn’t ‘get it’ and maybe that was just me. I also could not for the life of me like Maggie! I felt she was too detached, especially with the tragedy that happened in the first chapter I still didn’t  feel her pain. And her ‘romance’ with Landon seemed to be lacking something. But this is all just MO.

I had a very hard time committing myself to this book wholly. I could have just been thrown off from the whole ‘viddles’ word but It didn’t do it for me. While I liked the magical side of it, the others not so much. Maybe I’m just to old to fully appreciate the story for what it was.  This was probably more of a book for Josh (the other bestie) than  me, Although I do love a good YA and this is not to say I won’t read something else by Renee Collins in the future i liked it, just didn’t love it.

Darker Days by Jus Accardo

Published July 29, 2013 by bookbesties

Darker Days 900px cover-1

Seven Sins. Six Innocent people. Five Days. Piece of cake….

When gorgeous new client, Lukas Scott, saunters into the office requesting their help to find a stolen box, it sounds like a simple case—until the truth comes out. The box is full of Sin.

Let me start by saying I had never read a book by Jus Accardo before, granted  she was in my large and ever-growing TBR pile, but I had never gotten around to one of her books.  Well after reading Darker Days, let me tell you her books just got moved up the list! Had I known I was in for such an awesome ride with her books I would have long since read them. I want everyone to be able to read this book so that I can talk about it with them!

From the time I had done the cover reveal and read the teasers I was hooked. You have a teenage girl who fights demons, with her MOM and they run a detective-by-day-slash-demon-hunting-by-night business. Score! Jus did an awesome job at drawing me in to ALL the characters introduced in the book and I can tell this will be one of the series to look out for. You are going to want to know what happens next at each page turn, and no matter how much I told myself ‘after this chapter I will…’I couldn’t put it down until I was done.

Imagine if Veronica Mars and Buffy the Vampire slayer had a kid. That kid would be Jessie Darker.  With just enough snark to be funny and relatable she also can kick ass and take names with the rest of them and far from a normal teenage girl.

“Last week, I evicted a nest of Hell Hounds in the park; got a twelfth century ghost out of the record room in town hall, and two days ago I went shopping with a witch and a necromancer. What about that screams normal to you?”

Everyone around her want to protect her, but all she wants to do is prove herself and prove herself she does. This book was not short on action, something was always happening, there was never a dull moment but there was kissing, because there is ALWAYS time for that. But it still was never lacking and normally I can guess what will happen in the book before it’s told. Like the big secret reveal. The Scooby Gang ain’t got nuthin’ on me!

But this book…I got nothing. It kept me guessing and on my toes EVERY.SECOND.  The intricate plot and story line was written it left me thinking about what could happen in the books to come long after I finished. This is how you start a series, with a bang and Jus certainly did that.

Not everyone can do paranormal YA and I will admit I am somewhat of a YA snob, I like who I like and that’s it. Jus has made my list. Excellent read and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
*I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.*

This Man Trilogy by Jodi Ellen Malpas

Published July 22, 2013 by bookbesties

So there are those certain books that make you scream out loud like that and laugh and go “Awwww” all girl like and in the same breath make you go “OH MY GOD YOU ARE SO STUPID!”. Well this was my experience with the This man Trilogy!

While at work one day we were slow and I decided to read, well the main character did something insanely stupid and I was in total shock of said stupidity so I said “What the %uck” rather loudly in my quiet office and got four curious stares pointed at me. Thank god my boss was not there that day!

Let me tell you about Jesse Ward.

He is not you’re typical mag-millionaire with a tortured soul that needs saving and…wait maybe he is, BUT Jess Ward will have your jaw on the floor from his harshness and then in the same breath have you melting with his sweetness.

“Just tell me one thing before you leave Ava, How loud do you think you’ll scream when I *uck you?”

“You completely consume me,Ava. I can’t function without you. I’m totally addicted to you, baby.”

He wants what he wants and he wants it, and “It” just so happens to be a one Ms. Ava O’Shea, interior designer and when they set eyes on each other sparks fly. But Ava can spot a potential broken heart a mile away having just gotten out of a four-year relationship. But Jesse Ward will not let her get away from him that easily. Over the course of three books demons are fought, fights are had, countdowns and demands are made, and truths come to light. And Oh yea there is TONS of sex. All kinds actually. Jesse is a fan of %ucking the sense into someone, giving reminder %ucks, retribution %ucks and a whole lot of others. These books don’t lack imagination in  that department let me tell you.

The only problem that I did have with the books was the first one in general, Jesse’s behavior was bordering on stalkerish  and had that been me, first I’m not sure I would have played so hard to get and if I did I’m not sure I wouldn’t have been calling the cops at his behavior later.  I also was not a fan of how the female lead was seeming so very naive , I mean you would have had to be blind to not guess what the big secret was in book one. But still that was not enough to get me to NOT like/love the trilogy. The last two book were bananas! I loved the sometimes volatile  but never violent arguments that the couple faced and the running conflict that was started somewhat in the first book and blew up in the third only to be resolved nicely by the end of the trilogy.  On average I loved the books and will more than likely be re-visiting Mr. Ward.

4 out of 5 stars.
